The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning as a period of strong winds associated with Storm Herminia is expected to affect Northern Ireland today (Sunday 26 January) potentially causing disruption to transport and infrastructure.
The weather warning is in place from 10:00am to 7:00pm on Sunday evening.
A spokesperson for the Met Office commented:
“Winds will increase through Sunday morning, with a spell of strong to gale force east to southeasterly winds likely.
“Many areas will see gusts 40-50 mph, with coasts and hills perhaps seeing occasional gusts to 60 mph.
“Given ongoing recovery work after Storm Éowyn, impacts may be more widespread than would ordinarily be expected with winds of this strength.
“Winds will slowly moderate from the south Sunday evening.”
Meanwhile, teams of engineers are scrambling to restore electricity supplies to thousands of homes across Northern Ireland after the impacts of Storm Éowyn which caused widespread destruction on Friday, 25 January.
In the latest update on Sunday morning, Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) confirmed 101,000 customers remain without electricity, with power now restored to 183,000.
With NIE assessments carried out on the network on Saturday, estimated restoration details for customers still without power is available on the NIE website. However, restoration efforts today may be affected by the further yellow weather warning for strong winds.
Economy Minister Conor Murphy met with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero Minister Michael Shanks MP on Saturday afternoon to discuss power restoration efforts following Storm Éowyn.
Minister Shanks ensured that the English Distribution Companies are prioritising delivery of the established mutual aid agreements between them and NIE Networks.
Fifty-two engineers arrived from England on Saturday evening, 30 of which will be utilised by NIE and 22 will assist ESB Networks in the Republic of Ireland.
