Women’s Aid ABCLN Community Services Manager, Ase McWilliams and Business Development Manager, Kelly McDonald are encouraging everyone to take big steps to end violence against women and girls and join them for Women’s Aid ABCLN’s Slieve Donard Challenge.

In a bold initiative to raise funds and awareness for their vital work, Women’s Aid ABCLN has announced the launch of its inaugural Slieve Donard Challenge, set to take place on Saturday, 28 June 2025.

The event invites participants to scale Northern Ireland’s highest peak, Slieve Donard, in a guided hike aimed at uniting communities in the fight against violence towards women and girls.

The challenge will commence at Donard car park in Newcastle, where participants will embark on a trek to the summit of Slieve Donard, standing at 849 metres. Renowned for its breathtaking vistas, the peak offers panoramic views across the Irish Sea, with the coast, Belfast Lough, Dublin Bay, and even the Isle of Man visible on clear days.

The proximity of the summit to the sea enhances the scenic allure, promising a memorable experience for all involved.

Kelly McDonald, Business Development Manager at Women’s Aid ABCLN, expressed enthusiasm for the event, which marks a new chapter for the organisation.

“This is our first-ever Slieve Donard hike, and we are thrilled to bring together a group united by a shared vision of supporting women,” she said. “We encourage people to sign up individually, with friends, colleagues, or family. While the hike is challenging, we want it to be a relaxed and enjoyable day out.”

The guided ascent will allow ample time for participants to soak in the stunning scenery, capture photographs, and enjoy a well-earned lunch at the summit before descending back to sea level. The event is designed to be inclusive, catering to both seasoned hikers and those seeking a meaningful challenge for a worthy cause.

Women’s Aid ABCLN plays a critical role in supporting women and children affected by domestic abuse across Antrim, Ballymena, Carrickfergus, Larne, and Newtownabbey. The charity provides confidential support, information, and refuge accommodation to those in need, offering a lifeline to individuals escaping abusive situations.

Funds raised through the Slieve Donard Challenge will directly support these services, enabling the organisation to continue its life-changing work.

Ms McDonald highlighted the ease of getting involved:

“Our online registration process is straightforward and sets you up with a personal fundraising page. Participants can share this link on social media or collect donations using a traditional sponsorship form.”

She urged prospective hikers to visit www.womens-aid.org.uk/slieve-donard to sign up and join the cause.

The Slieve Donard Challenge represents more than a physical feat; it is a powerful statement of solidarity with survivors of domestic abuse. By bringing together people from all walks of life, Women’s Aid ABCLN hopes to foster a sense of community and shared purpose in tackling violence against women and girls.
