Forty-six people in Mid and East Antrim speak Irish as a main language, the 2021 Census has shown.
It has also been stated that 263 people, 0.2 per cent of the borough’s population, say that they can speak and read the Irish language but cannot write it.
However, 1,616 or 1.2 per cent say that they can speak, write, read and understand Irish. A total of 982 say that they can speak but not read or write the language.
The census notes that 2,807 Mid and East Antrim residents understand but do not read, write or speak Irish.
By comparison, 15,536 residents in the borough understand but do not read, write or speak Ulster-Scots; 4,340 can speak but do not read or write the language; 2,245 can read but not write Ulster-Scots and 3,260 speak, read, write and understand it.
The census shows that 129,304 residents speak English as a main language; 1,483, Polish; 132, Lithuanian; 1,578, Romanian and 116, Portuguese. The population of Mid and East Antrim is 138,994.
For those whose main language is not English, 1.39 per cent say that they speak it very well.
In Mid and East Antrim, 24,866 people described themselves as Catholic; 44,739, Presbyterian; 15,385, Church of Ireland; 4,795, Methodist; 15,494, other Christian religions; 1,191, other religions; 30,502, no religion and 2,702 did not state religion.
In the borough, 88,121 people have a British passport only; 12,757 have an Irish passport; 7,030 have both and 24,340 have none.
The census reports that 68,213 residents consider themselves to be British; 11,162, Irish; 27, 620, Northern Irish; 765, British and Irish and 1,216, Irish and Northern Irish.
Statistics show that 135,902 residents of Mid and East Antrim are white; 133, Irish Traveller; 747, Roma; 176, Indian; 398, Chinese; 211, Filipino; 92, Pakistani; 16, Arab; 152, other Asian/Black; 225 Black African; 55, Black other; 691, mixed; 194, other.
There were 122,795 people in Mid and East Antrim who were born in Northern Ireland; 5,300, England; 1,5641, Scotland; 215, Wales, 1,058, Republic of Ireland; 5,530 other European; 199 other non-European; 905, Middle and North Africa; 495, North America, Central USA and Caribbean; 76, South America; 214, Antarctica/Oceania and other.
There are 58,282 households in the borough. Of these, 17,904 were one person households; 19,009, two person; 9,574, three person; 7,724, four person; 2,830, five person and 1,243, six+ people.
In the 0-4 years age group, there were 7,537 children; 5-9 years, 8,176; 10-14, 8,483; 15-19, 7,912; 20-24, 7,236; 25-29, 7,689; 30-34, 8,488; 35-39, 8,499; 40-44, 8,460; 45-49, 9,195; 50-54, 10,674; 55-59, 10,296; 60-64, 9,009; 65-69, 7,511; 70-74, 7,024; 75-79, 5,701; 80-84, 3,752; 85-89, 2,207; 90+ 1,444.
