The USPCA is calling for stricter regulation on the sale and use of fireworks after a recent poll conducted by the organisation reveals that over 80% of pet owners report negative impacts on their companion animals due to fireworks.
Respondents shared alarming accounts of their pets suffering from the loud noises during firework displays:
“My poor cat hid under the coffee table the other night. Broke my heart”.
“Petrified, heavy breathing, shaking”.
Another respondent said:
“My cat collapsed on my knee during fireworks in our neighbourhood. After that, took a brain aneurysm and died”.
USPCA CEO Nora Smith said:
“It is our view that the current laws around private displays are not fit for purpose. They are unpredictable and harder to control. It is impossible for neighbours to prepare their pets, horses and farmed animals properly. Fireworks frighten animals and our wildlife is impacted.
“The USPCA is therefore calling for stricter regulations and measures to better safeguard animal welfare.
“Many people with pets will agree that the needs and wellbeing of their animals come first and should be put before a few minutes of entertainment from fireworks.”
With fireworks likely to continue up to New Year’s Eve this year, the USPCA are kindly asking the public to think twice about where and how they use them, even whether they need them at all.
