Translink has scooped the “Rail Team of the Year” award at the prestigious Rail Business Awards 2023, the national awards for the UK rail sector.

The team were recognised for their work on the Translink NI Railways New Trains 3 Project that saw the integration of additional carriages into existing Class 4000 trains, creating seven longer “walk-though” six car sets.

The team overcame a number of challenges, not least Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, and the new fleet was introduced ahead of schedule.

Translink’s Director of Service Operations Ian Campbell said:

“This is a tremendous achievement for Translink and I am extremely proud of the New Trains 3 project team.

“This was an extremely important project for us, with the longer trains creating around 1,600 additional seats across the network on a daily basis. These new trains are also greener and more energy efficient and will help encourage even more people on board. They support the low carbon economy, protecting the environment and ensuring a better, more inclusive and resilient future for everyone.

“I’d like to thank all my colleagues and our supplier CAF, who worked hard to deliver the project and bring these new longer trains to our customers across Northern Ireland.”

Announcing Translink as winners, the Rail Business Awards judges said this was a great example of innovation, planning and outstanding teamwork, which kept a complex project on track and safe despite the challenges of Covid, ensuring that the new fleet introduction was delivered ahead of schedule.

These national awards attract high profile entries from across the UK. Winning ‘Team of the Year’, Translink beat stiff competition from other major rail businesses including: Balfour Beatty Rail, MTR Elizabeth Line and Northern Trains.
