The Consumer Council’s festive travel tips

With the countdown on to the festive season, the Consumer Council has issued some tips for those planning on travelling over Christmas.

 

The advice will help consumers prepare in advance for a hassle-free trip without unnecessary additional expense.



Michelle Kelly, Head of Transport at the Consumer Council, said:


“Many people will be planning to travel at Christmas, whether that be flying via local airports or using public transport.


“Planning ahead can take the stress out of travelling and there are things you can do now such as pre- booking special assistance and getting your travel insurance in advance to make sure all your needs are covered.


“We would also recommend that before travelling, consumers brush up on their consumer rights when it comes to delayed flights or sailings. We would encourage consumers to check out our website which has tons of information and guidance on travel and transport.”



The Consumer Council’s festive travel tips:

 

  • Check public transport timetables – If you are planning to use public transport for any part of your journey, check with Translink for their holiday timetables.

 

  • Taxis – Consider booking your taxi in advance if you know your journey times. Remember that taxis are allowed to charge more on certain days at Christmas.

 

  • Pre-book special assistance – If you have a disability or reduced mobility, request assistance at the time of booking your flight or at least 48 hours in advance to ensure availability.   • Airport security – Check airport security procedures particularly regarding liquids in hand luggage, be mindful that different airports may have different rules.



  • Check the airline baggage policy – Ensure that your baggage is within airline guidelines to avoid any extra costs. 

 

  • Do not wrap gifts before going to the airport - Security may want to inspect your bag.

 

  • Check communication – Read all correspondence from your airline and check its website. Contact the airline immediately to make alternative arrangements if your flight is cancelled.
