Robin Swann MP has expressed his strong support for amendments to the Employment Rights Bill, urging the UK Government to extend bereavement leave rights to women who experience a miscarriage, as well as their partners.

The South Antrim MP hailed the Government’s recent confirmation of their commitment to this principle as a significant step forward, with plans to collaborate with the House of Lords to ensure the change is implemented.

In response to the announcement, Mr Swann said:

“It is welcome news that Miscarriage Bereavement Leave will soon be enshrined in law. This will be a huge support for women and their partners at such a difficult time, and I’m very pleased that the Government have acknowledged and supported this call.

“I’d like to extend a thanks to Sarah Owen MP for proposing these amendments and all those who have campaigned for years to make this happen.”

The amendments, championed by Labour MP Sarah Owen, aim to provide formal recognition and support for those affected by miscarriage, ensuring they are not forced to rely on sick leave during a period of profound personal loss.

Responding to Mr Swann’s comments, Ms Owen said:

“Thanks to your support, women and partners who experience the devastating loss of miscarriage or baby loss will not have to take inappropriate sick leave but will be able to take time to grieve. I have already received notes from across the country saying what a difference this would have made for them. This change means future generations of women won’t have to face what they did.”

Mr Swann further expressed his hope that the policy would set a precedent beyond Westminster, adding:

“As this now appears to have been accepted by the Government, I hope that the Northern Ireland Executive will follow.”

The move has been widely praised by campaigners who have long advocated for better support for those affected by miscarriage, marking a significant shift in employment rights to address the emotional and practical needs of grieving parents. With the Government’s backing, the amendments are expected to progress through Parliament, offering a compassionate lifeline to countless families across the UK.
