With the arrival of spring, Northern Ireland comes to life with birdsong as nesting season begins. From 1st March to 31st August, birds across the country are busy building nests, laying eggs, and raising their young.

The USPCA is calling on the public to embrace the season by taking simple steps to help protect these animals.

Siobhan McHaffie, USPCA Director of Operations said:

"We can all play a role in helping our bird population thrive now and for years to come. This nesting season we are encouraging homeowners, farmers, and land managers to take extra care to avoid disturbing nesting sites.”

While spring brings new life, it is also a vulnerable time for nesting birds. Cutting or clearing hedgerows, trees, and scrub can destroy nests and expose young birds, when they need the most protection.

There are many ways to make gardens and green spaces bird-friendly. Before trimming trees, bushes, or moving vegetation, check for nests to prevent disturbance. If fledglings are on the ground, keep cats indoors and leash dogs nearby.

Swallows, house martins, and swifts return each year to nest in buildings—leaving old nests intact or installing nesting boxes can provide vital shelter.

By taking just a few simple actions, we can all help protect our local bird population this spring. Whether living in a town or the countryside, all our efforts can make a lasting positive impact helping these species thrive for generations to come.

If you witness illegal nest disturbance or destruction, please report it to the PSNI on 101. For advice on protecting wildlife, contact the USPCA on 028 3025 1000.
