A professional singer has launched ‘Sparkle For Sinead’ to raise money for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) charities following the diagnosis of her cousin.

Ballymena woman, and former student of St Louis Grammar School, Catrina Scullion has recorded a heartfelt rendition of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ to support Motor Neurone Disease Association Northern Ireland (MNDA NI) and the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) in Dublin.

Catrina decided she wanted to raise as much money as possible for the charities after her cousin, Sinead, was diagnosed with MND shortly after the birth of her third child in 2021.

Sinead was diagnosed with a rare and rapid form of the disease and now requires round the clock care.

MND is a disease in which messages from the motor neurones gradually stop reaching the muscles. This leads the muscles to weaken, stiffen and waste, which can affect how people walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe.

MND is life-shortening and there is no cure.

As part of Sparkle for Sinead, Catrina has re-recorded the classic song, available in exchange for a donation to her GoFundMe page.

She will also perform a charity concert at Ballymena North Business and Recreation Centre on 1 December with special guests the Sanctuary Singers and under the direction of conductor Loreto McAuley.

The concert will also include piano accompaniment by Catriona McElhinney-Grimes, Catrina’s long time friend and collaborator.

Catrina said:

“Sinead’s courage, positivity and strength inspire me every day. I promised her that I would use my voice to raise awareness and support for MND charities and this song is my way of honouring that commitment.

“The power of music to unit people in solidarity and compassion is undeniable. With You’ll Never Walk Alone, I hope to bring people together to support families affected by this challenging disease and honour Sinead’s spirit and positivity.

“This campaign is for her and for every person touched by MND.”

Stephen Thompson, Chairman of the MNDA NI, said:

“Catrina is a very talented and renowned singer and to have her support in fundraising for our charity is fantastic.

“MND is a terminal disease, so every penny counts in our fight to find a cure and to support people with MND and their families.

“We are very thankful to have Catrina’s support and the funds raised through Sparkle for Sinead will make a real difference.”
