There has been shock and sadness after news was confirmed today that a popular Antrim restaurant has closed it's doors.

The Boathouse Antrim located at the busy Loughshore location in the town closed at the end of trade yesterday evening, Sunday 6 August.

Commenting on Sunday night on social media, one restaurant diner, Michelle Myers said:

"We had a lovely meal in the Boathouse Antrim tonight. Can't believe tonight was the last night of service. The emotion was palpable.

"The staff were absolutely amazing, despite the fact they had only found out this morning that their jobs were being terminated at the end of today. The food and service was second to none. A complementary drink for all diners.

"The removal team had moved in before closing time. Our thoughts are with those, that now find themselves without a job Thank you for your service this evening."

The Boathouse Antrim opened with much excitement in the newly built and council-owned Gateway facility at Loughshore Park in December 2019. The restaurant offered diners stunning views over Lough Neagh, thanks to the solid glass exterior, and prided itself in offering 'delicious, freshly cooked dishes, homemade desserts and bakes.'

While at time of publishing the Boathouse have not published news of the closure on their social media platforms or website, an automated message via social media contact states:

"As off 8pm Sunday 6th August we have closed our doors. Any outstanding vouchers that have been purchased for the Boathouse can be used at our sister restaurant Top of the town. For an further bookings/reservations please contact Top Of The Town. Many thanks."

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council issued a statement today saying:

"The Council was advised yesterday by Loughshore Restaurant Ltd that they would cease trading at close of business on Sunday 6 August.

"As a result the Boathouse Restaurant, Little Swan Coffee Shop at the Gateway and Diana’s Tea Rooms at Antrim Castle Gardens will be temporarily closed.

"We hope to have alternative arrangements in place as soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

It is understood Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council will now seek a new company to take over trading from impacted locations.

In a further statement to Love Ballymena on Monday evening, a spokesperson for the Council said:

"The Council was advised yesterday by Loughshore Restaurant Ltd that they would cease trading at close of business on Sunday 6 August 2023 and had informed their staff of this.

"The Council has provided information to the Company in relation to employment opportunities in the Borough for employees who have been impacted by their decision.

"The Council is currently reviewing its options for alternative arrangements."
