Lifestyle Fitness Ballymena is set to become a hub of hope and resilience for cancer survivors with the launch of the transformative Battle Cancer Programme, starting 31 March 2025.
This free, 12-week fitness initiative, developed in collaboration with CAWS and Battle Cancer, is designed to help individuals reclaim their physical and mental strength following cancer treatment, offering a lifeline to those ready to rebuild their lives.
A Programme Tailored for Recovery
The Battle Cancer Programme at Lifestyle Fitness Ballymena is no ordinary fitness regime. Running from 31 March to 18 June, this coach-led initiative provides a structured pathway for cancer survivors to regain confidence and vitality.
Classes will take place every Monday and Wednesday from 7:30 to 8:30am, offering participants two 60-minute sessions per week focused on progressive training.
Each session incorporates simple, accessible movements tailored to suit all fitness levels and abilities. From strength-building exercises like deadlifts, squats, and presses to mobility drills and aerobic components, the programme is carefully crafted to enhance overall fitness.
Coaches adapt every movement to individual needs, ensuring that participants—whether new to exercise or seasoned gym enthusiasts—can complete each repetition safely and experience maximum benefits.
The programme begins with an initial assessment during the first class, where participants’ strength, fitness, and mobility are evaluated to establish a baseline. From there, the 12-week cycle becomes a journey of growth, guided by expert coaches who foster steady improvement.
Who Can Join the Fight?
The Battle Cancer Programme is open to anyone who has completed cancer treatment at least two months prior and has received medical clearance to exercise. It welcomes survivors of any cancer type, regardless of their fitness background.
“The programme is accessible to any ability,” says Joshua Courtney, Lifestyle Fitness Ballymena. “With adaptable and scalable movements, we ensure every person can participate, no matter their restrictions, and still feel the full impact of building their strength.”
This inclusivity lies at the core of the initiative, making it a welcoming space for those who might feel hesitant about returning to fitness post-treatment. Best of all, the programme is entirely free, removing financial barriers and ensuring that all eligible participants can take part.
The Power of Exercise in Cancer Recovery
The benefits of structured physical activity for cancer survivors are well-established. Research shows that exercise can significantly enhance quality of life, reduce fatigue, and improve physical function after treatment.
A 2023 study in the British Journal of Cancer highlighted that guided exercise programmes led to notable gains in muscle mass, cardiovascular health, and mental well-being among survivors—outcomes the Battle Cancer Programme aims to deliver.
Beyond the physical gains, the programme builds a powerful sense of community. Participants worldwide have praised its ability to create lasting connections, with many reporting not just increased strength and mobility, but also a renewed sense of confidence and belonging.
“It’s about more than fitness,” Joshua explains. “It’s about rebuilding lives and offering support that endures.”
A Global Movement Arrives in Ballymena
The Battle Cancer Programme has already empowered thousands of cancer survivors globally, and now Lifestyle Fitness Ballymena is bringing this proven model to Northern Ireland. The launch underscores the club’s dedication to supporting its members and the local community through impactful health initiatives.
