With another weekend of dry and fine weather on the horizon, police in Newry, Mourne and Down are urging the public to enjoy the region’s stunning beauty spots responsibly.

The call comes in the wake of recent wildfires that have scorched areas of the Mournes, prompting heightened efforts to prevent further outbreaks.

Local officers have stepped up patrols in response to the fires, which have threatened both the environment and nearby communities in recent weeks.

District Commander Superintendent Norman Haslett emphasised the severe impact of these incidents, stating:

“Gorse fires can cause untold damage, and in an area of outstanding natural beauty like the Mournes, this is particularly devastating, not to mention the risk to life and property that they pose.”

To combat the threat, police have deployed additional resources, including 4x4 vehicles, motorcycles, and a quad bike capable of reaching remote locations. Air Support units have also been utilized to provide an aerial perspective of the mountainous terrain, enhancing efforts to monitor and protect the area.

Superintendent Haslett highlighted that wildfires are largely preventable, noting:

“Wildfires are completely avoidable and, more often than not, they are caused by human activity—whether this is through carelessness and inattention, or deliberate and malicious fire setting.”

He warned that such fires not only devastate the environment but also endanger the lives of residents and the emergency services personnel tasked with tackling them.

The police have made it clear that deliberately starting a wildfire is a criminal offense, carrying the possibility of prosecution. “We work closely with our colleagues in the Fire Service in dealing with these fires,” Haslett said. “Where it is found that a fire has been maliciously set, it will be fully investigated, and when identified, those responsible can expect to be arrested and brought before court.”

As part of their appeal, authorities are asking the public to act responsibly while visiting the Mournes. They also encourage anyone with information about criminal activity linked to previous fires to come forward. “If anyone has any information, please call us on 101,” Haslett urged.

With the weekend approaching, police hope their message resonates with visitors, ensuring the Mournes remain a safe and beautiful destination for all to enjoy.
