Police supports Women’s Aid ABCLN this Christmas

Police in Mid and East Antrim have joined forces with Women’s Aid ABCLN to raise awareness of the signs of all types of domestic abuse and encourage anyone affected to get help this Christmas.

Speaking at Ballymena Police Station, Vulnerability Inspector Siobhan Watt said:

“PSNI figures show that there is often a significant spike in domestic abuse incidents over the festive holiday period.

“Christmas is a time of joy for many people, but it can also be a time of fear and control for those in a physical or emotionally abusive relationship. Last year during the Christmas period, the PSNI received a call every 16 minutes related to domestic abuse and 97 incidents were reported on Christmas Day alone.

“As part of our ‘Tis the Season Christmas campaign, want to raise awareness of the signs of all types of domestic abuse. It’s important to remember domestic abuse is not just physical. If you are afraid, or if you’re walking on eggshells, or have no control over your own life – this is abuse and we can help you."

Women’s Aid ABCLN Area Manager, Fran O’Boyle said:

“Domestic abuse can include threatening, controlling, coercive behaviour, violence or abuse. We provide specialised services and support for women and children affected by domestic abuse and we want you know that help is available.”

Inspector Watt added:

“If you are experiencing domestic abuse or worried about someone who might be, please report to the Police on 101 or in an emergency always dial 999.

“If you dial 999 but cannot speak stay on the line and press 55 when prompted. This is called the ‘silent solution’ and you can cough or tap in response to the operator’s queries to get help.”

Women’s Aid ABCLN provides confidential support, information and emergency accommodation for women and children who are affected by domestic abuse across Antrim, Ballymena, Carrickfergus, Larne and Newtownabbey.
