The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) is actively seeking public assistance following a disturbing series of attacks on cats in Mid and East Antrim.
Last week, multiple cats were found to have been brutally beaten, with one succumbing to its injuries in the Eden area of Carrickfergus.
According to a PSNI spokesperson, the incidents occurred over two days, causing widespread concern among local residents.
"Police are appealing for information or witnesses to reported attacks on cats last week in the Eden area of Carrickfergus. A number of cats have been severely beaten with one being killed. Local vets have advised that these injuries had been inflicted by humans," the spokesperson stated.
The community has reacted with horror and condemnation.
Ulster Unionist Councillor for Carrick Castle DEA Bethany Ferris expressed her dismay, saying, "I cannot imagine what goes through anyone's mind to hurt a defenceless animal who are treasured family pets. If anyone has any information, please report it to 101."
In response to these heinous acts, the USPCA (Ulster Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) has stepped up efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
They have announced a £500 reward for information leading to the conviction of those responsible. A USPCA spokesperson emphasised the severity of the situation:
"We’re offering a £500 reward for info that leads to the conviction of those responsible for a series of brutal attacks on cats in Carrickfergus.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact the police on 101, quoting serial reference number 1213 of 26/10/24.
