New initiative launches to train HGV and bus drivers in Mid & East Antrim

Updated: Nov 8

Mid & East Antrim Labour Market Partnership (MEALMP) has announced the launch of the Transport Academy, aimed at training unemployed or under-employed residents to become qualified Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) or bus drivers.

This initiative seeks to fill the gap in the transport sector while providing substantial employment opportunities to local residents.

Eligibility and application process:

The Transport Academy is open to individuals who:

- Reside within the Mid & East Antrim council area.

- Are currently unemployed or working less than 21 hours per week.

- Have held a full, clean, valid UK driving licence for at least two years, with both the plastic card and paper counterpart.

- Are willing to undergo a medical examination and a driving assessment.

- Can commit to completing all training components, including theory and practical tests.

- Show a commitment to gaining qualifications and entering employment in the transport sector.

In a bid to tackle gender disparities in the industry, the Academy particularly encourages applications from women.

Program details:

The Academy, managed by Workforce Training Services, offers comprehensive training for obtaining either a Category C (HGV Class 2) or Category D (PCV bus) licence.

The training includes both theoretical education and practical driving experience, culminating in tests that qualify participants for immediate employment in the transport industry.

Impact on the community:

This initiative not only aims to enhance employment rates within the region but also helps in meeting the growing demand for skilled drivers in the transport sector. By offering these opportunities, MEALMP addresses both economic and social issues, promoting inclusivity and providing new career pathways for residents.

As spaces are limited, potential candidates are encouraged to apply promptly to secure their spot in the Transport Academy. This program represents a significant step forward in local employment initiatives and sector-specific skill development in Mid & East Antrim.

How to apply:

Interested candidates should email their contact details, including address and postcode, to info@workforceonline.org.

Applicants must include ‘Mid & East Antrim Transport Academy’ in the subject line and specify their preferred category of training - either Category C for HGV or Category D for bus driving.

For further inquiries, individuals can contact the MEALMP at lmp@midandeastantrim.gov.uk or call 028 2563 3363.
