Mid and East Antrim Borough Council in partnership with Galgorm Resort and in collaboration with The Woodland Trust Northern Ireland's Emergency Tree Fund, has recently completed an ambitious project that has transformed 15 acres of land into a thriving new woodland.

This initiative has seen the planting of 7,500 native trees, including Irish oak, hazel, birch, wild cherry, and many others, creating a vital buffer zone for the nearby Galgorm Wood.

Galgorm Wood, an ancient woodland dating back to 1660, is a rare gem in Ireland, boasting a rich tapestry of ground flora that offers visitors a truly enchanting experience.

The newly established woodland is set to significantly enhance local wildlife habitats, providing essential nesting and feeding sites for birds, shelter for mammals, and a rich source of pollen for pollinators. These native trees are perfectly adapted to bolster the local ecosystem, ensuring its resilience and diversity.

The project not only enhances the natural beauty of the area but also contributes to the conservation of one of Ireland's precious ancient woodlands. Ancient woodlands, continuously thriving since 1660, are a rarity in Ireland, and this initiative helps to protect and preserve these vital habitats for future generations.

For those interested in supporting similar initiatives, funding is available for additional projects on sites larger than 0.5 acres. For more information and guidance, please contact the team at 07552250257 or via email at trees@midandeastantrim.gov.uk.
