Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Major Investigation Team have launched a murder inquiry following the death of a man in Newtownards.

Detective Chief Inspector Anthony Kelly said:

"We received a report that a man was unconscious at a residential property in the West Street area of the town, just before 1.50am this morning, Thursday 26th December.

"The man, aged 50, was taken to hospital where, sadly, he later passed away. A post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

“Two women, aged 58 and 33, were arrested at the scene while a man, aged 36, was arrested at a nearby address a short time ago.

"They have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody at this time.

“Our investigation is at a very early stage and we are working to establish the full circumstances around this deplorable incident.

“Cordons remain in place and local residents will see a visible police presence in the area.”

Detective Chief Inspector Kelly continued:

“Of course, it’s particularly shocking that this should happen at Christmas and we know that the thoughts of our community will be with this man’s family and friends today.

“I am appealing to anyone who believes they may have information which could assist with our investigation to contact us on 101 quoting reference number 98 of 26/12/24.”
