Largest parade in Ballymena in recent memory to celebrate Northern Ireland’s Centenary

In what is expected to be one of the largest band parades in many years in Ballymena, the NI 100 Centenary Banner Parade will set off tomorrow, Saturday 21 August, at 2pm.

It is understood that well over fifty bands from across Northern Ireland will participate with the full banner procession, filling the streets of the town with music, colour and beats.

For those who are planning to attend, with thousands expected to line the parade route, it is recommended to arrive early to claim your spot.

Looking forward to the celebrations, Councillor Rodney Quigley said:

“Saturday’s Banner Parade will be the biggest event on the Northern Ireland Centenary calendar and it is fantastic to see Ballymena hosting it.

“Before the parade itself a Centennial bench will be presented to the town by the NI100 Centenary Committee, and a service of dedication will take place in the Memorial Park at 12.00 noon, led by Reverend Mervyn Gibson, Grand Chaplain GOLI.

“I look forward to seeing many banners and bands from throughout the province and also welcoming the many spectators to the town who'll be attending the parade from near and far.

“I'd like to remind everyone who is attending the parade, whether they are taking part or spectating, that this is a family-friendly event and would ask that this be respected.”

There will be a number of diversions in place throughout the town during the parade, and traffic delays are to be expected.

Commenting ahead of the parade, local Police said:

“Road users are advised to expect delays in Ballymena tomorrow afternoon (Saturday 21 August), between 2pm and 5pm, due to a parade.

“The Centenary Banner Parade sets off from Wakehurst Road, and disruption to traffic can be expected across the town centre and Ballymena South.

“Please plan, and allow extra time for, your journey. Traffic management and diversions will be in place.”
