Mid and East Antrim Borough Council recently marked National Tree Week 2023 by distributing over 900 free native trees to local residents.
National Tree Week is the UK’s largest annual tree celebration and marks the start of the winter tree planting season, which runs from November until March each year, while trees are dormant.
Local residents visited Carrickfergus, Portglenone and Glenarm to collect their trees with Parks & Open Spaces staff on hand to advise on the best type of tree to choose and how to plant it.
Species available included oak, birch, hazel, willow and crab apple. The trees were provided through The Woodland Trust NI - who generously provided funding for the initiative through the Emergency Tree Fund.
Trees are essential for the health and well-being of both the planet and people. They provide oxygen, filter pollutants, reduce noise, prevent soil erosion, enhance biodiversity, and beautify the landscape. Trees also have social and economic benefits, such as improving mental health, reducing stress, increasing property values, and creating jobs.
Council is keen to hear from landowners, community groups and schools who may have space for trees on their land. If there is a site available and some willing volunteers, Council may be able to provide the trees.
