The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim has wished all athletes with links to the borough success in the Olympics and the Paralympic Games.
The Paris 2024 Olympic Games will officially get under way today, Friday 26 July. The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will commence on August 28.
Speaking at a meeting of the council at The Braid, in Ballymena, on Monday evening, Alderman Beth Adger MBE, said:
“I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate swimmer Danielle Hill, from Larne (Swimming Club), who recently won gold in the 50 metre backstroke in the European Aquatic Championships in Belgrade.
“She also won silver in the 100 metre backstroke, narrowly missing out on gold by four seconds. This is a fantastic confidence boost for Danielle prior to the start of the Olympic Games in Paris.
“Indeed, can I wish all athletes with links to our borough success both in the Olympics and the Paralympic Games.”
The Mayor also congratulated the borough’s recipients of honours in His Majesty the King’s Birthday Honours list last month. They were:
William Edward Adamson MBE Northern Ireland development officer, National Sheep Association for services to the sheep industry.
Catherine Harper MBE, Carrick, for services to domestic abuse support in Northern Ireland.
John Madden MBE, principal of Roddensvale School in Larne, who was awarded for services to education and to children with special needs.
Claire Drummond BEM, head of student well-being, at Ulster University, for services to higher education.
Andrew Kennedy BEM, chair of the board of governors at Ballykeel Primary School, Ballymena, for voluntary services to education and to the community in Ballymena.
Brian Lynas BEM for services to the Boys’ Brigade and to the community in County Antrim.
Karen and Patrick McCourt, Larne, both awarded a BEM, for services to foster care in Northern Ireland.
“On behalf of council, I would extend our warmest congratulations to all connected to the borough who have received honours and I have asked that they receive a personal letter from the mayor’s office. Congratulations again.
“Congratulations also to Whitehead Coastal Rowing Club women’s team who recently won Cork’s long distance rowing race ‘Ocean to City’ for the second year running. Well done to all involved.”
