The rescue unfolding at Grassington in the Yorkshire Dales, directed by Carnlough Firefighter Arnold Stewart
In a dramatic rescue that unfolded on the banks of Linton Falls in Grassington, Yorkshire Dales, firefighter Arnold Stewart from Carnlough Fire Station demonstrated his excellent skills and quick thinking, helping to save the life of a young girl caught in perilous river conditions.
On Sunday, August 11th, Arnold Stewart, along with friends Eamon, Stephen, and Barry, were enjoying a holiday exploring the scenic North Yorkshire Dales when they stumbled upon a distressing scene at Linton Falls.
A crowd had gathered around the river where a young girl was stranded on a rock amidst fast-flowing water. Another man was attempting a rescue by passing her a rope from the opposite bank.
Recognising the danger, Arnold, equipped with his training from the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS), swiftly took charge of the situation.
He redirected the rescue operation, opting for a safer approach. Instead of pulling the girl towards the opposite bank, which could have dragged her underwater, Arnold used a throw line from upstream and a long pole to safely reach the line to the girl.
She managed to secure herself to the line, and with the coordinated effort of Arnold and his friends, she was brought safely to the riverbank.
Eamon, one of Arnold's companions, praised his friend's decisive actions, noting that Arnold's presence likely prevented a tragedy.
"If Arnold hadn't been there, things could have turned out much worse," Eamon stated, reflecting on past incidents where the same stretch of river claimed lives.
