Lidl Northern Ireland, the region’s fastest-growing supermarket retailer, has contributed more than £269,000 into local charities and community groups across the NI last year, according to the results of Lidl’s 2021 Impact Report.
The report was launched this week to promote the positive economic and social impacts made by the retailer within communities across Northern Ireland. Over 210 people are employed directly in Lidl Northern Ireland’s 10 stores in the Northern region.
Reducing food waste and CO2 emissions
Lidl Northern Ireland’s community partnership with FoodCloud has seen staff and customers donate more than 3 million meals to its network of charities and community groups across the island of Ireland. The partnership not only provides local charities with donated meals and in-kind donations but also works to reduce food waste.
In 2021, the partnership diverted more than 270,000 kgs of food from being sent to landfill across the island of Ireland and saved almost 875,000 units of CO2.
In Northern Ireland, the Northern region alone diverted over 13,000 kgs of food from landfill, saving over 43,000 units of CO2.
Lidl Northern Ireland also has an established ‘Waste Not’ initiative across all 41 stores, creating a significant price reduction on a range of chilled food products that have reached their best before date but are still perfectly fresh and fine to eat.
Through the initiative, more than 137.5 tonnes of food waste are reduced annually.
Since 2018, Lidl Northern Ireland has continually achieved ‘zero waste to landfill’. In August last year, Lidl Northern Ireland announced its commitment to becoming a carbon neutral business by 2025, reducing its operational emissions by 46% by 2030.
Charitable partnerships
In 2021, Lidl Northern Ireland entered into the fourth year of partnership with NSPCC Northern Ireland. Last year, Lidl Northern Ireland raised more than £107,000 for NSPCC Northern Ireland and donated 136,950 meals to over 60 charities all over Northern Ireland.
The Northern region was responsible for raising over £21,000 for the charity through a range of local and national initiatives and delivering 32,020 meals to FoodCloud charities.
Established in 2017, the strategic partnership has delivered funding of more than £700,000 for NSPCC Northern Ireland. Last month, Lidl Northern Ireland announced the extension of its charity partnership with NSPCC Northern Ireland for a third consecutive time, committing to a new fundraising target of over £1.1 million by 2024.
Investing in People
With more than 1,000 staff employed across its network of 41 stores and Regional Distribution Centre in Nutts Corner, Antrim, Lidl Northern Ireland is committed to investing in its people.
Earlier this year, Lidl Northern Ireland was named Top Employer for 2022 by the Top Employer’s Institute for a second year running.
Since 1999, Lidl Northern Ireland has led the way in retail employment, consistently outperforming in the sector and offering staff a market-leading benefits package including award-winning learning, development and progression opportunities within in the business.
In recent years, Lidl Northern Ireland has developed a series of award-winning local programmes to support staff development and employment opportunities. These include The Princes Trust ‘Get into Retail’ programme, a Bursary scheme in partnership with Ulster University and Queen’s University and the ‘Feed Your Mind’ degree programme in association with Ulster University and Irish Times Training.
In January 2022, Lidl Northern Ireland confirmed it is investing £1.5 million in additional pay increases to all of its employees. Effective from March 1, 213 employees in the Northern region are set to benefit from £248,000 in salary investment.
Lidl Northern Ireland has already paid more than £300,000 in Covid-19 bonuses to all employees throughout the pandemic in recognition of their efforts, commitment and dedication during a challenging period.
In November 2021, the company committed again to paying the new recommended Living Wage, exceeding the advisory rate by a further 20p to £10.10 for more than 450 employees and building on its commitment to fair pay for all employees.
Lidl became the first nationwide retailer on the island of Ireland to introduce this back in 2015.
