Last tenant of tower block in Larne waiting to be rehoused ahead of demolition

Just one tenant of Larne’s last remaining tower block is waiting to be rehoused, Mid and East Antrim councillors have been told.

Speaking at a meeting of the council’s Direct Services Committee on Tuesday evening, Frank O’Connor, the Housing Executive’s regional manager (North Region), says that demolition of Latharna House will be procured once a new home has been found for the resident.

He also said a health and safety survey will be carried out on site for asbestos.

Mr O’Connor went on to say the Housing Executive is in “almost daily” communication with the sole tenant of the high-rise flats in the town centre.

Last August, the Housing Executive reported that there were 28 remaining tenants in the last of three block of flats at Riverdale.

Previously, Mr O’Connor said that the Housing Executive had been approached by “some housing associations about building elderly accommodation” on the Latharna House site.

Twenty-four one-bedroom apartments are earmarked for the site of the former Gardenmore House flats at Riverdale.

The project will see the development of a new five-storey apartment building, containing 24 category one apartments, which are for people over 55 years of age, three of which will be wheelchair accessible.
