A collaborative operation between the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA) took place in Larne on Wednesday, 16 April, targeting unroadworthy vehicles and raising awareness of critical road safety issues.

The initiative, part of ongoing efforts to reduce road traffic collisions and fatalities, focused on educating drivers about the dangers of the so-called “Fatal Five” behaviours: careless driving, drink and drug driving, speeding, not wearing seatbelts, and using mobile phones while driving.

The operation, conducted in the coastal town of Larne, saw officers from the PSNI and DVA inspectors working together to carry out vehicle checks and engage directly with the public.

Over the course of the day, more than 20 drivers received on-the-spot advice and guidance regarding minor vehicle defects and broader road safety practices. This educational approach aimed to encourage safer driving habits and ensure compliance with vehicle standards.

However, the operation also uncovered a range of offences, leading to enforcement actions. A total of 12 Fixed Penalty Notices were issued for various traffic violations, while several vehicles were served with prohibition and defect notices following rigorous DVA inspections.

These notices require immediate rectification of faults to ensure vehicles meet legal and safety standards before returning to the roads.

Among the more serious findings, two drivers were identified as operating vehicles without valid insurance, resulting in the seizure of their vehicles.

Additionally, one disqualified driver was apprehended, with further investigation revealing a series of related offences. As a direct outcome of these detections, two prosecution files are being prepared for submission to the Public Prosecution Service, highlighting the operation’s role in upholding road traffic laws.

The PSNI and DVA underscored the importance of such joint initiatives in fostering safer roads across Northern Ireland. A PSNI spokesperson commented:

“This operation demonstrates our commitment to tackling dangerous driving behaviours and ensuring vehicles are roadworthy. By addressing the Fatal Five and engaging with the community, we aim to prevent collisions and save lives.”

This latest operation forms part of a broader strategy by the PSNI and DVA to reduce the number of road deaths and serious injuries in Northern Ireland, where the Fatal Five remain a leading cause of collisions.

Authorities have pledged to maintain their collaborative efforts, combining enforcement with education to promote a culture of responsibility among drivers.

As the PSNI and DVA continue their work, the message to motorists is clear: adhere to road safety laws, maintain vehicles in good condition, and avoid the Fatal Five. With further operations planned, the commitment to safer roads across Northern Ireland remains steadfast.
