As the new school term gets underway, Translink is advising students aged 13-16 to get their free digital travel ID card, which gives young people an easy and convenient way to provide proof of age.

In partnership with digital ID experts, Yoti, the Translink Travel U16 Youth ID app is safe and secure for young people to use. Free to download, it acts as a reputable proof of age to enable young passengers to purchase child fares at 50% off standard bus and rail fares.

Brand Representative at Translink, Maeve Nethercott, said:

"Getting the bus or train to and from school gives children independence, develops their social skills, and provides a safe and cost-effective mode of transport. As many young people are eager to contribute to addressing the climate emergency, public transport offers a sustainable way to travel and reduce emissions.

“With public transport helping reduce traffic congestion during peak times in our towns and cities, using the bus or train is a great way to make a big difference.

“With the Translink Travel U16 Youth ID, young people have a free and convenient way to provide proof of age, while also benefitting from cheaper travel and contributing to a cleaner environment. As another school term gets underway, we would encourage all those aged 13-16 to sign-up and stay better-connected to school and leisure activities."

Young people are advised to visit translink.yoti.com to download the app to their smartphones and scan the QR code to create their account. The digital travel ID card can be presented to the driver or conductor to receive the appropriate discounted fare.

The Translink Travel U16 Youth ID card is accepted in addition to the existing Translink Proof of Age card that continues to be available at stations.
