To celebrate International Compost Awareness Week,which is taking place from 5-11 May, Mid and East Antrim Borough Council are teaming up with leading organics recycling company Natural World Products (NWP) to give local residents a free bag of compost!
The scheme will enable ratepayers to collect the free compost from Tuesday 7 May from designated collection points including:
• Waveney Road Household Recycling Centre, Ballymena
• Redlands Household Recycling Centre, Larne
• Glenarm Household Recycling Centre
• Larne South Household Recycling Centre
• Sullatober Household Recycling Centre, Carrickfergus
Bags of compost will be limited to one bag per car, and on a first come, first served basis.
NWP produces peat-free compost by converting household food and garden waste received by local authorities across Northern Ireland - including Mid and East Antrim Council.
Mid and East Antrim Mayor, Alderman Gerardine Mulvenna, said:
“With it being International Compost Awareness Week, we are proud to announce our longstanding partnership with NWP to promote composting as a sustainable waste management practice.
“The compost provided by NWP will go a long way to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and also enrich our soil, which in turn will help reduce our carbon footprint.
“We would like to encourage all members of our community to join us in the efforts to create a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment for our area.”
Sharon McMaster, Community Outreach Manager at NWP, said:
"We are pleased to be partnering with Mid and East Antrim Council to provide free compost to householders across the Borough.
“The compost is made using green waste from homes across the Council area, a real demonstration of the impact of effective recycling.
“By applying compost in our gardens, allotments and green spaces, we are returning organic matter to the earth, greatly improving soil health and fighting climate change by locking up carbon. That’s not to mention the incredible positive impact associated with gardening itself, such as boosting mental wellbeing, social cohesion and improving bio-diversity.”
The initiative is part of NWP's ongoing commitment to sustainability, the circular economy and helping to reducing waste.
