Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council has successfully brought charges under the Dogs (Northern Ireland) Order 1983 (as amended) against Mr Andrew Reid of Doagh at Belfast Magistrates Court on 30 July 2024.
Mr Reid pleaded guilty to the charges of being the keeper of an American Bully type dog that attacked a person and a dog on 31 August 2023.
The proceedings followed an investigation by the Council’s Enforcement Officers after they received a report that the dog belonging to Mr Reid had attacked.
Mr Reid was fined £100 for being the keeper of an unlicensed dog and ordered to perform a total of 120 hours unpaid work under a Community Service order for the offences of being the keeper of a dog that attacked a person and another dog.
In addition, Mr Reid was ordered to pay an offender's levy of £15 and £500 costs to the Council. He was given until 28 January 2025 to pay.
A spokesperson for Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, stated:
"Council prioritises the investigation of all offences under dogcontrol legislation. Any attack against a person or another animal will be rigorously investigated, and formal action such as prosecution will be taken when necessary, as demonstrated in this case.
“We would encourage responsible dog ownership through ensuring that dogs are always kept under control when in a public place.”
