A North Down politician has called for the replacement of speed cameras that were mysteriously removed on the A2 from Belfast to Bangor.

After several items of correspondence and engagement with the Department for Infrastructure over several months, the PSNI has so far been unable to put forward a motive or rationale behind the removal.

An undisclosed number were removed close to Holywood Train Station.

DAERA Minister and Alliance MLA Andrew Muir said:

“It is bizarre that all records of the removal of these average speed cameras on this part of the A2 appear to have disappeared.

“Safety concerns remain on this stretch of road, particularly in relation to Marine Parade and the approach to the Esplanade/Shore Road junction and traffic lights. Residents have asked me for an explanation and to request that the cameras be restored, and it is frustrating for them and me that this has not proved possible.

“It has been suggested that the average speed cameras were perhaps inappropriate due to cars slowing as they approach the junction. However, it remains the case that drivers have been known to race through these lights and serious collisions have occurred.”
