Culture Month 2024 at the Old Church Centre Cushendun: A celebration of heritage, arts, & community

The Old Church Centre is delighted to announce the return of Culture Month, a vibrant celebration of arts, heritage and community, set to invigorate the weekends of September 2024.


With an exciting line-up of events, including exhibitions, workshops, concerts and talks, this year promises to be a cultural feast for all ages.


The programme begins on 30th August with the Cushendun Local Painters’ Art Exhibition, showcasing a diverse collection of paintings available for viewing and purchase. This marks the beginning of a series of engaging events aimed at celebrating Cushendun’s rich cultural tapestry.



The official launch event on 6th September at 7 pm will explore the historical connections between Cushendun and Newtowncrommelin. In partnership with the Glenravel and District Residents’ Association, we will celebrate the bicentenary of the foundation of Newtowncrommelin by Nicholas de Lacherois Crommelin. We are honoured to welcome distinguished guests including Mid and East Antrim Borough Council’s mayor, Beth Adger MBE, and the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens, Ciaran McQuillan. Historian Kevin Hamill will provide an address. This event is free but requires registration.


On 7th September, from 1 to 4 pm, a Set Dancing Workshop will be held at St. Ciaran’s Primary School. Hosted by Ronán Eastwood, this workshop revives traditional set dancing and is suitable for both beginners and experienced dancers. The event is provided by Cushendun District and Development Association as part of Culture Month. The cost is £6, payable at the door, and booking can be made via thecdda@gmail.com.



The same day, Nigel Ireland and musicians from the Ulster Orchestra will offer an innovative workshop for children and young people from 11 am to 12 pm. Their vision is to inspire and nurture a love of the orchestra and orchestral music, taking participants on an interactive journey of discovery.


Later, at 8 pm, the Ulster Orchestra will present an evening concert at the Old Church Centre, embarking a delightful musical journey.


On 8th September at 7:30 pm, journalist and author Eamonn Mallie will take us through his through his life as a journalist in Northern Ireland. From the frontlines of the Troubles to the corridors of power, Eamonn’s fearless reporting has made him a legendary figure in Irish journalism.


European Heritage Days will be celebrated on 14th-15th September, with the Old Church Centre open to visitors, offering an opportunity to learn more about the history, heritage, and renovation of the building.



Cathal McNaughton, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer, will present his exhibition "Reflections" on 14th September. This will be followed by a talk about his distinguished career as a photojournalist.


Later that evening, Karl McGuckin, a renowned bass-baritone, will perform a free concert, promising an thrilling musical evening.


Adding a culinary dimension to Culture Month, celebrated chef Paula McIntyre will present a cookery demonstration. Hailing from Aghadowey, Co. Londonderry, Paula has trained in the USA, managed her own restaurant, and become a familiar face on TV and radio. This event, part of the Hamely Ulster Scots Fayre, will see Paula showcasing the rich and traditional flavours of North Antrim cuisine in her signature down-to-earth style.



The month will also feature a concert by Liam Ó’Maonlai on 27th September at 8 pm. Acclaimed for his role as lead singer with Hothouse Flowers, Liam will perform a solo concert blending various musical genres.
