Cullybackey man sentenced to 10 years following aggravated burglary in Ballymena

A 30-year-old man from the Cullybackey area has been sentenced at Antrim Crown Court today, Monday 16th December.


Aaron McIlhatton was sentenced to 10 years, following a report of an aggravated burglary at the Grove Road area of Ballymena on Wednesday 14th September 2022.



He will serve five years of his sentence in custody and five years on licence. In addition, he also received a Violent Offender Prevention Order to run for five years, subject to when he is released from custody.


Mr McIlhatton forced his way into a house through the front door and made his way inside, where he stabbed a man a number of times. The victim suffered serious injuries to his head, neck and abdomen.


Mr McIlhatton was previously convicted of aggravated burglary inflicting grievous bodily harm and possession of a firearm or imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.



A spokesperson for the PSNI commented:


“Today’s sentencing offers reassurance that police will work tirelessly to bring offenders before the courts so that the victims receive the justice they deserve.
