Council Officers understood to be proposing Rate increase of 9.97% in Mid and East Antrim

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council chamber

It is understood Mid and East Antrim Borough Council officers are recommending an increase of 9.97% ahead of this evening's meeting to strike the annual Rate.

An anonymous local councillor said they are "disgusted" by council's Chief Executive and senior officers, who they accuse of "trying to rush this devastating Rates increase through", with councillors only receiving papers in the last hour.

It is also reported a number of DUP and Ulster Unionist councillors are urging their parties to back the TUV position opposing the proposed hike which would be the highest across all councils in Northern Ireland.

The source also alleges "Alliance, Sinn Fein and many DUP members are understood to be willing to back this increase".

The councillor granted the ability to speak anonymously said:

"I am disgusted that the Chief Executive and Senior Council officers are trying to rush this devastating Rates increase through.

"This is a sorry day for the ratepayers of Mid and East Antrim and any officer or elected representative that tries to defend this as figure as a good news story is out of touch with reality."

The Councillor concluded:

"Councillors face a choice of increasing the already high burden on residents and businesses or appeasing Council Officers who are trying to avoid accountability for almost a decade of poor financial management.

"It will be telling who stands with local residents against the appalling actions of unelected Council officers."
