North coast coastguard teams have warned the public to keep their dogs on the lead when near cliffs.
It follows a rescue mounted today (Monday 23 May) by Coleraine and Ballycastle Coastguard Rope Rescue Teams in the Portstewart area.
The teams were tasked to a report that a dog had fallen off a cliff and the owner was in difficulty after attempting a rescue. Sadly the dog passed away. The owner was recovered safely.
A spokesperson for the Coastguard commented:
“Unfortunately this type of incident happens frequently around the North Coast.
“Please keep your pet on a lead near cliff edges. If your dog has fallen, do not attempt a rescue yourself but call 999 COASTGUARD.”
