The Northern Health and Social Care Trust is encouraging people to recycle their unwanted clothes through a new partnership with NI Hospice.
A number of recycling banks have been installed at sites across the Trust, as part of a collaboration which aims to cut down on waste while supporting the charity’s vital work.
Through its CARECYCLE scheme, NI Hospice can sell the pre-loved clothes to generate funding for its programmes or give them directly to people in need.
With sustainability a key focus within the Northern Trust’s Corporate Plan, the initiative creates an opportunity for staff, service users and the wider public to get involved in a small but effective way.
Cara Browne, the Northern Trust’s Waste and Recycling Manager said:
“Donating pre-loved clothes using our new NI Hospice donation banks not only cuts down on waste by extending their life span but also helps those in need.
“By taking part, you become an active participant in sustainable fashion. You help reduce the demand for new clothing production, which in turn reduces the consumption of natural resources like water, energy, and raw materials and the amount of textile waste ending up in landfills.”
The rise of fast fashion has led to a significant increase in clothing consumption, which has led to a staggering amount of textile waste piling up in landfills. According to WRAP, around £140m worth of clothes end up in UK landfill sites every year, while the global fashion industry is responsible for around 10% of greenhouse gas emissions.
You can find the donation stations at the following locations:
Antrim Area Hospital, staff car park entrance
Whiteabbey Hospital, new ward block
Mid Ulster Hospital, OPD entrance
Moyle Hospital, OPD entrance
Ballymoney, adjacent to the Roddens Residential Home
Don’t forget that small, collective steps can make a big difference when it comes to sustainability so please show your support by donating instead of dumping.
