Who Can Join?
Ballymena Runners, with over 300 members of varying abilities, stands on the principle that running is for everyone. The club supports both the fastest and the slowest runners, ensuring everyone feels included and supported.
The Cosy Sofa programme particularly aims at those looking to start running, providing a pathway from novice to potentially joining the club's regular runs or participating in local Parkruns.
What Does the Cosy Sofa Involve?
Participants are expected to commit to three runs per week - one guided run on Tuesday evenings, a self-guided run during the week, and another guided run on Saturday, often integrated into a Parkrun at Ecos or The Fisherman's Walk in Portglenone.
The programme features a structured Cosy Sofa Training Plan tailored to build endurance gradually.
Safety and Preparation
- Visibility: Participants are encouraged to wear high visibility or reflective clothing to ensure safety during the darker evening runs.
- Weather: Dress for the weather with waterproofs, hats, and gloves recommended for January conditions. More tips can be found on the Running Safely page.
Community and Support
The success of the Cosy Sofa lies in the community spirit of Ballymena Runners. Each participant will be supported by club members, many of whom have journeyed from the Cosy Sofa to becoming regular members or leaders themselves.
The programme culminates in a celebratory graduation where new runners receive their T-shirts and enjoy a communal meal.
