Alliance representatives Sian Mulholland MLA and Cllr Chelsea Harwood have condemned the overnight attack on a community building in Broughshane, stating the incident is not representative of those in the community.
The North Antrim MLA said:
“The attack on Broughshane House is disgraceful and those responsible should face the full consequences of their actions. I have spoken to representatives of the organisations impacted by this and know they will continue their vital work for the community regardless.
“The nature of this attack is extremely concerning and must be robustly condemned by all. It’s clear the disappointing narrative regarding the recent Christmas lights switch-on has played a role in this attack.
“We need to see leadership in our community and those with a platform to condemn these actions robustly and be aware of how their statements carry weight and incite this sort of despicable behaviour.”
Councillor Harwood, who attended the recent festive events and has worked closely with the Community Association added:
“Those behind this attack are not representative of the Broughshane I have come to know. This is an affront to all in the village who believe the area to be a diverse and welcoming place open to all. It is deeply regrettable that the Christmas festival, which was yet again another success, has been marred by such a senseless attack.
“Broughshane House is vital to the local area with several organisations working from and running programmes out of it, so to see it vandalised in such fashion will have a major impact on those who rely heavily on the services offered in the building.
“Alliance representatives have been in contact with the PSNI and have urged anyone with any information to contact them on 101 quoting reference number 176 27/11/24.”
