TUV Alderman Stewart McDonald (Bannside) has welcomed the announcement today that a £450,000 resurfacing scheme is set to get underway next week in Ahoghill.
Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins today (Tuesday 18 March) announced that a £450,000 footway and carriageway resurfacing scheme on the Old Portglenone Road in the village will commence on Monday 24 March 2025.
The resurfacing scheme will extend from The Diamond approximately 900m in the direction of Portglenone.
Minister Kimmins said:
“This is a substantial investment for the Ahoghill area which will deliver significant benefits for residents and road users. The investment demonstrates my commitment to improving our rural road network, which is vital for connecting our businesses and communities.
“I would like to thank residents, local businesses, and commuters for their patience while this essential infrastructure work is carried out.”
Responding to the works scheme, TUV Alderman Stewart McDonald said:
“Having campaigned for the resurfacing of the roads and footways along Brook Street and the Old Portglenone Road for three years I am delighted to receive confirmation that work will get underway on 24th March.
“This is a matter which has needed to be addressed for some time and I believe that the short-term inconvenience will be outweighed by the benefits of this work”.
To facilitate the safe delivery of the scheme it will be necessary to implement lane closures during the hours of 8am to 6pm from Monday 24 March 2025 until Friday 18 April 2025.
A continuous road closure will be in place from Monday 28 April 2025 until Friday 9 May 2025 to accommodate the resurfacing works. Further lane closures from Monday 12 May 2025 until Friday 23 May 2025 will be required for completion of the works.
During the times of the road closure a diversionary route will be signed as follows:
The Diamond, A42 Portglenone Road, A42 Ballynafie Road, U2044 Parkfield Road, C55 Old Portglenone Road and vice-versa.
The Department has programmed the work operations and traffic management arrangements to minimise inconvenience. However, while steps have been taken to accommodate local access throughout the scheme, road users should expect some delays and are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the vicinity of the works and are asked to comply with all temporary traffic restrictions.
Subject to favourable weather conditions the works will be substantially complete by Friday 23 May 2025, however the Department will keep the public informed of any change.
