A new era for veterans' services in Northern Ireland

Welfare Service - Northern Ireland (VWS NI) signposting service

A new chapter in veterans' welfare has begun in Northern Ireland with the expansion of the Veterans Welfare Service - Northern Ireland (VWS NI).

The expanded initiative aims to provide comprehensive support to all veterans across the province, regardless of their service background.

Historically, veterans in Northern Ireland have faced unique challenges due to the region's complex history. Many have kept their service careers hidden due to security concerns, especially during the period known as 'the Troubles' or Operation Banner.

The VWS NI builds on the foundations laid by the Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR) and the Royal Irish Aftercare Service, established in 2007.

The VWS NI offers a range of services tailored to meet veterans' needs, including welfare support, medical assistance such as physiotherapy and psychological therapy, financial support, and advocacy services for benefits, housing, and vocational advice. Additionally, the service provides support with Armed Forces Pensions and Compensation Scheme applications.

The Northern Ireland Veterans’ Awards, returning for a third year, is another significant development. Led by Jason Gillard, the founder of Connect Through Service, these awards aim to highlight the positive contributions of the veteran community and change the narrative surrounding veterans in Northern Ireland.

Nominations for the 2024 awards are now open, with the ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, 23 October, in Belfast.

With continued development and advocacy, the future for veterans in Northern Ireland looks promising.
